adidas launched Equipment in 1991. 35 years later, the classic EQT look is back at several top European clubs. New collections are available for Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Juventus, Manchester United and Real Madrid.
Bold colour blocking, relaxed cuts, Trefoil branding and classic club crests define the new collections bringing back adidas' 90s look.
The link to that era is obvious. Originally, though, Equipment came from a very different idea.
adidas Equipment Started as a Performance Line
When adidas introduced Equipment, or EQT, in 1991, function came first. The products were meant to give athletes exactly what they needed for performance, protection and comfort, nothing more. adidas wanted to leave out anything that wasn't necessary for that.
In football, too, EQT quickly developed its own look. The most striking feature was the large-scale use of the Three Stripes across the shoulders. Between 1991 and 1994, numerous clubs and national teams played in kits from this era.
The new collections draw on elements from the 1994 adidas Equipment collection and translate them, using today's materials, into clothing for matchday and everyday wear.
EQT Returns at Several Top European Clubs
With Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Juventus, Manchester United and Real Madrid, a whole string of major adidas clubs are getting new EQT collections. Some of the pieces have already been spotted on players as teams arrived at the stadium ahead of matches. adidas has also released matching EQT collections for several national teams.
The comeback fits a retro trend that has been running through football for several years now. Clubs and kit suppliers keep pulling old shirts, logos and design elements out of their archives, using them as the starting point for new collections. EQT now gives adidas another chapter from the 90s to draw on.
The new EQT collections are available via adidas' online store as well as the online stores of the individual clubs.
