With a Rolex and a Retro Tracksuit: Messi Breaks the Record in Style

A Rolex and a retro-look tracksuit on arrival – and a World Cup record by the end: Lionel Messi scored both goals in the win over Austria. But he was turning heads well before kick-off.

Before Lionel Messi made history against Austria, he was already drawing eyes on arrival at the stadium in Dallas. On his wrist he wore a Rolex Day-Date 40 in yellow gold with a green dial – list price 48,600 euros. The model is one of the most eye-catching in the Day-Date range, and the green is a striking, less commonly seen dial variant. With it he wore the adidas EQT track top from the Argentina collection in a retro look, available for 100 euros.

On the Pitch, Messi Breaks the World Cup Scoring Record

On the pitch, things continued as smoothly as they had on arrival. Argentina won their second group game at the World Cup 2-0 against Austria, with Messi scoring both goals. He missed an early penalty but then struck just before half-time and again late in the game.

In the opener, Messi had already netted a hat-trick in the 3-0 win over Algeria, scoring all of his team's goals; now he added more. That puts him on five goals at this tournament – and 18 at World Cups in total.

With that tally, Messi is now the all-time top scorer at World Cups. He has surpassed the record of Miroslav Klose, who previously held the mark with 16 goals.

Messi scored his first World Cup goal back in 2006 against Serbia and Montenegro. Twenty years later, the record belongs to him alone.

That said, Messi has Kylian Mbappé on his heels – nearly eleven years younger, with several World Cups still ahead of him. Mbappé scored twice in France's 3-0 win over Iraq and now sits on 16 goals in total.
