For his first World Cup start, Lamine Yamal stepped off the team bus with a custom chain around his neck. The pendant shows his goal celebration, and that celebration tells the story of where he comes from.
Before his first World Cup start, Lamine Yamal already drew attention as he stepped off the bus. Ahead of the game against Saudi Arabia in Atlanta, the forward wore the Spain tracksuit from adidas' EQT line, two phones in his right hand, and a custom chain around his neck.
Its pendant shows a gesture long associated with Yamal. After scoring, he forms the number 304 with both hands. Set with diamonds, that gesture became the centrepiece of the chain. What began as a celebration on the pitch, he now carries with him off it.
What the 304 means to Lamine Yamal
The 304 stands for the last three digits of the postal code 08304. It belongs to Rocafonda, a neighbourhood in Mataró, about half an hour north of Barcelona, where Yamal grew up. It is a simple, multicultural area, far from the districts where you'd expect to find global stars. As a child, Yamal regularly made the long journey from here with his father to the youth academy La Masia.
He makes the finger gesture for Rocafonda, for the people he grew up with. The number appears on his boots, it shows up on his family's social media, and he has since had it registered as a trademark. A postal code has become his personal symbol, one the chain now carries on.
The look for his first World Cup start
The Spain tracksuit fit the picture too. The piece from the EQT line picks up the sportswear of the nineties, a look you see everywhere in football right now.
On his chest, diamonds glinted, pointing to a neighbourhood that usually gets little attention. Expensive jewellery and humble origins, side by side: that fits Yamal well.
Why Lamine Yamal is already a style figure
It's worth remembering what this player has already achieved at 18. At 16, he became the youngest scorer in the history of the European Championship and won the title with Spain. Since then, every one of his appearances is watched closely, on the pitch and off it, right down to jewellery and gestures. At his first World Cup start, all of it came together: the expectations, the big stage, and around his neck, a piece of Rocafonda.
